Nora Lee Watkins Smith Evans of Hurlock, Maryland passed away at Peninsula Regional Medical Center on Monday, August 25, 2014. She was 82. She was born on April 3, 1932 in Eldorado, Maryland, the daughter of the late Harley Guy Watkins and Susan Elizabeth Townsend Watkins. She graduated from Bridgeville High School the class of 1949. She continued her education at Goldey Beacom earning a degree in accounting. She owned and operated the first nursing home in Somerset County, the Smith Nursing Home in Crisfield, which opened in 1963. She was a lifetime member of the Crisfield V.F.W. and later transferred her membership to the Federalsburg V.F.W., the American Legion Post 16, and Elks Lodge both in Crisfield and the Moose Lodge in Westover. She spent her whole life volunteering and helping people. She took in the homeless and was dedicated to helping veterans receive their much deserved benefits and was known affectionately as “Mom” or “Miss Nora”. She is survived by two daughters, Susan Smith, and Lori Smith, both of Hurlock, MD, four grandchildren, Stephan Smith, Nora Lee Smith Sherwood and Scott, Justin and Amanda Smith, and Johnny Smith, nine great-grandchildren, a sister, Arintha “Rinky” Kinnamon of Seaford, two brothers, Stengle Watkins of Bridgeville, and Harley Watkins and his wife Madeline of Laurel, DE. She was preceded in death by her son, William C.”B.J.” Smith, and eighteen brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 29, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. at the Framptom Funeral Home with Rev. Denzil Cheek officiating. Interment will follow in McKendree Cemetery near Rhodesdale. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. prior to the service.
